How long would Iran be able to hold out against an American invasion?

I hear that Iran is tougher than a lot of the countries we've been fighting lately like Iraq and Afghanistan, but probably not good enough to win a war against America. How long would this war last, if and when it takes place?

1. America does not want a war with Iran, due to its nuclear possibilities. A war would be the absolute last resort. I have a feeling we would win the war (surrender) fairly quick after the initial pre-emptive strike. They would lose Electricity, the air, the sea, & eventually their city's.
2. It's not gonna happen. Obama is going to appease them, even if it means the death of the US as we know it.
3. Obama is kissing muslim butt so its not going to happen. Iran wouldnt last a day if full force was used.
4. We have already been finding out how tough these middle eastern people are when we fight them on their own turf. Iran could hold out for quite awhile because like the other middle eastern countries they are fanatical. They will keep bouncing back no matter what we do. Besides, as it is , the soldiers aren't allowed to fight the war the right way. The politicos are telling them what they can and cannot do. And the media announces every military move before we do it so the enemy is prepared. What ever happened to military secrets? And if the politico want to call the shots, let THEM go fight over there and bring our kids home. They did the same thing in Viet Nam, and that is why we lost that one.
5. The government would probably not hold out very long. Yes, Iran's military is a lot stronger than Iraq's was, and yes the Basij may number hundreds of thousands - but even so, the US military is a lot stronger. The people could hold out for many years. Just look at Vietnam and Iraq. It doesn't matter if the government falls - guerilla warfare is very easy, you can use rifles against napalm and win, you just need to bide your time and not care about your casualty rate.

7. If it were to just go in and eff up the military, it would take no longer than 1 week. Having said that, that would also depend on the manner in which the arm chair generals back home would allow it to happen. If they had their way, where we simply shoot paint balls and cook dinner for those who would do us harm, it may take longer.
8. Iran has learned some lessons for the gulf war and OIF. first off the leadership is different from Saddam. The Ayatollah answers to a higher power then a typical dictator. You can expect similar devotion seen in the Japanese in ww2. The terrain of Iran itself would favor the less technology advance. All the hill mountains leaves can makes some of our weapons systems and sensory equipment obsolete Iran also has much higher population a much bigger army then Iraq and is a bigger country. Also after seeing how easily the Iraqi SAM sites and airfields were taken out Iran will likely to protective measure to ensure the same does not happen throw all that in with new weapons treaties and mutual defense pack with Russia it could be a long and bloody war even if the Iranian and it could be a long and bloody war 6months to a year would be my guess just to destroy the goverment. a hell of a lot longer to bring stability

Hmmm, see - that's part of the problem with this country and it's people now days...*shakes head in disgust*...The first thought that pops into a number of peoples' minds are, "How soon till our next war!?" and/or "Who do we get to fight this time!?" People, everywhere, WAKE UP - WAR IS *NOT* A GAME! There is *MUCH* to lose - including, but not limited to: other human beings lives, their homes, their ways of life, money, respect, etc etc - the list goes on and on! (If you need any proof of this, look at the recent bombings in Gaza!) My husband is from Iran, and it disgusts me to hear my fellow Americans speaking like this! STOP IT ALREADY!! Bush and his group of crooked phonies are gone - and so should be that/his particular mind-set and lies! I'm sure most of you will be surprised to hear that most Iranians like/admire Americans - partly because of the freedoms that we have here, amongst other things. My husband is one of the sweetest men I have ever met - so you can't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about! When will we, as humans, realize that war is not the first/always the answer?!...(Hasn't anybody heard that war doesn't always solve problems - but most times, only makes more problems or makes existing problems worse?) Yes, there are times that we may need to use war - as a *very* last resort, when all other efforts (such as *serious* attempts at communication) are extinguished. But all too often, I honestly feel that we don't use our minds and really think things through - and take the initiative to try our best to communicate and reason with others different than us! For goodness sakes - use the brain you were given already! Don't let it rot and lose it!..And most importantly, don't be a sheep - just because everyone else says that walking over a cliff is fun, doesn't mean you have to agree/follow what they say! Think for yourself!

It would as long as the world war III, having Iran, Russia and China at a side and USA and it's associates on the other side of war. and after this war, i think, at the world war IV people probably will fight with sticks and stones, cause the third one already destroyed anything on earth! (A famous person had said this, I don't remember who......) sorry for any typing mistakes..
11. It would take longer as America would more than likely be alone in the invasion. Allied countries have had enough of following the states around and invading countries on the basis of freedom (aka...oil). Iran would be worse than Vietnam, and even if the country was defeated, maintaining stability would be next to impossible. It would drag on for years and the cost in lives as well as dollars would be huge. Obama's decision to approach Iran diplomatically instead of just issuing demands is the right way to go about things. America is already commited in Iraq and Afganistan, deploying troops to a possibly worse destination would not only destroy what hope troops have on going home, but demoralise their families as well.

13. HAHAH havent you heard that american man i forgot his name (by the way im half Greek Half Persian (iranian) ) he says "If you want a war with Iran pick a city ANY city eg. New york, Chigago GONE. He's reffering to the nuclear possibilities of Iran anyway i live in Australia but WOULDNT mess with Iran bad idea.
