President Iran

How would I go about doing genealogy research for people in Iran?

My Grandpa is from Iran. How would I go about doing research for ancestors in Iran? I am unaware of how the name system works in Iran. Is it more difficult than doing it on Europeans? How does their vital record system work? How far back did they keep records? How far, if you have done it, have you gone back?

  1. This is one of the few times that I will warn someone away from doing their own research. It's likely that you'll ruffle feathers by trying to get those records from a western country. If you have a family member still living in that country, you can ask for their help. If not, my humblest suggestion is that you find an Iranian student organization at a large university and see if one would help you by explaining the system, the record-keeping, and assist you with getting the records. You will not do well sending a letter in English into Iran. You'll need correspondence to be in Farsi and it needs to come from an Islamic country.
  2. this is the website of the national organization for civil registration: http://www.nocrir.com/ They are mainly in charge of these things. maybe they can help you. I believe they have records from the first day everybody acquired a surname in Iran.
